Past Events
‘Workshop on Chinese Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment legislation and International Experiences’
In September 2007, SEPA (State Environmental Protection Agency) ran, with the main input from Holger Dalkmann (C4S) and Olivia Bina (University of Lisbon), a 2 day workshop on behalf of GTZ (German Technical Cooperation) in Beijing, China. The Chinese government plan to develop a new SEA legislation. The workshop was joined by high-level representatives like NDRC (National Development Reform Commission), Ministry of Railways and Construction, State Council as well as Universities and NGOs.
The aim of the workshop was to discuss and comment on China's draft SEA legislation, and bring in international SEA legislation experiences. The first day of the workshop was focused on EU SEA legislation, and key themes and lessons learnt from the implementation of SEA in various countries, while the second day of the workshop concentrated on SEA applications in Europe. The presentations on this second day concentrated on issues with draft legislation of SEA in China, and five key sectors (Energy, Tourism, Transport, Landuse and Mining). SEA in Slovenia
In April 2007 the Centre for Sustainability (C4S) ran a 2 day training seminar in Slovenia with two local partners (E-Net Okolje and Aquarius) on behalf of the Slovenian Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning. The first day was aimed at representatives from relevant ministries with responsibilities for identifying development plans, programmes and strategies to which SEA applies. The second day focused on capacity building for SEA practitioners. The presentations covered the SEA process, with case studies for how SEA has been applied in other EU countries. The presentations were supported by exercises, during which SEA practitioners were able to apply the theory to examples and discuss decision making with C4S staff.
Scoping for EIA Aggregates
The Centre for Sustainability (C4S) delivered free training as part of a project to promote improved EIA Scoping practice for aggregates applications. The objective of the training was to highlight how resources can be better focussed on understanding and mitigating the significant environmental impacts of a quarry. The training was free to Minerals Planning Officers, Quarry Operators and Statutory Bodies and was delivered on a regional basis in October and November 2005. The project is being conducted for the Mineral Industry Research Organisation (MIRO) www.miro.co.uk and is funded by the ODPM’s Sustainable Land Won and Marine Dredged Aggregate Minerals Programme. Presentations from the event are available to download below. Please note if you wish to use any of these presentations they must be referenced appropriately.
